A contemporary artwork in the monumental frame of a classical painting? The photograph 'Hagar, Abraham and an Angel of God' by Hellen van Meene will be temporarily exhibited in the original frame of Jean-François Millet’s 'Hagar and Ishmael'.

The painting Hagar and Ishmael (1848-1849) by Jean-François Millet will be displayed at another museum. This painting’s frame is too large and fragile to travel, and will remain in place at The Mesdag Collection.
We therefore invited photographer Hellen van Meene to create a contemporary artwork based on the Biblical theme of the painting. This resulted in Hagar, Abraham and an Angel of God. Using a contemporary work to temporarily replace an artwork from a historical collection in this way is a unique approach that allows us to unite different centuries.
Hagar, Abraham and an Angel of God is now on display.
