Discover Urban Larsson’s unique portraits, still lifes and landscapes. 'Urban Larsson. Painting from Life' was on display until 18 June 2017.
26 April - 18 June 2017
Thanks to his unique style, Urban Larsson’s portraits are unmistakably his. Larsson (Stockholm, 1966) was schooled in the tradition of the old masters and only paints from models, giving his works a distinctive character. Enhanced by his deep interest in his models’ personalities, Larsson’s works offer a glimpse into the souls of his subjects.
Prominent people
His portraits are true to life, yet they also move slightly beyond the world of appearances. This results in fascinating compositions, whether they be of former Prime Minister of the Netherlands Wim Kok or the Swedish Queen Silvia, to name only a few of the prominent figures painted by Larsson.
Larsson’s still lifes and landscapes, painted outdoors, are also characterised by harmonious, balanced compositions and a subtle play of light and shadow.
Traditions from the past
Both Larsson’s working process and use of materials tie in with historical painting traditions. This retrospective exhibition of Urban Larsson’s work illustrated how 19th-century painting continues to inspire contemporary artists.
